Branded “The Blu Gardenia” by a sensational columnist (Richard Conte), Norah dodges dragnets, informants and the crul hand of fate as she struggles to conceal her involvement with Prebble and to remember the details of her ill fated night. As her hopes for justice fade, she decides to gamble her future on the journalist who transformed her into such a notorious public figure. Enhancing the melancholy mood of the film is the haunting theme song arranged by Nelson Riddle and performed to perfection by Nat “King” Cole.

Call this “The Odd Couple Goes to the White House.” Jack Lemmon and James Garner play ex-presidents in this lousy comedy, each of them having served only one term as chief executive and each the other’s lifelong enemy. The best jokes in the film are front-loaded into the first five minutes. We meet both men living life after the White House, one (Lemmon) making speeches for whoever will front his large fee, while the other (Garner) writes relevant books no one reads. Any time they show up at the same function, they insult each other like snarling schoolboys. It is pretty funny, but after a brief introduction My Fellow Americans goes downhill rapidly, becoming yet another stupid road movie traveled by characters who hate each other. (How many of these is Lemmon going to make?) The jokes get dumber and cruder, the actors embarrass themselves, and the whole enterprise becomes tedious. The DVD release contains production notes, theatrical trailer, bloopers, optional Spanish and French soundtracks, optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, and Dolby audio. –Tom Keogh

If most comedians secretly want to be tragedians, the famous, 17th century French actor-playwright Moliere was no exception, as is comically obvious in Moliere. Somewhat like Shakespeare In Love, Moliere is a work of fiction linking several of the bard’s most famous works with an imagined, personal experience leading to the writer’s inspiration. When we first meet Jean-Baptiste Poqulin–a.k.a. Moliere–he has been asked by the French king to perform something new as a show of gratitude for being given a theater. Moliere, best known for his comedies The Misanthrope and Tartuffe, is anxious to write a drama, but his royal fans (and, for that matter, everyone else) won’t hear of such a thing. Approached by a young woman who asks him to visit her dying mother, Moliere encounters an important woman from his past. From there, the story goes back in time many years prior: Moliere is rescud from debtor’s prison by the wealthy Monsieur Jourdain (Fabrice Luchini), who disguises the then-budding playwright as “Tartuffe,” a tutor for his daughter. Jourdain provides his gust with room and board, for which Jourdain expects Moliere to teach him to perform the aristocrat’s own one-act play, written to impress a comely young widow (Ludivine Sagnier) the married Jourdaine hopes to seduce. While Jourdain, a self-improvement dilettante, fritters away his time, Moliere falls for the man’s neglected wife, Elmire (Laura Morante), a situation that clearly contains the seeds of Moliere’s future hit Tartuffe. Co-written and directed by Laurent Tirard, Moliere is one of those films about an artist that encourages a viewer familiar with its subject to connect the dots between story details and the artist’s real-world legacy. It’s a lot of fun, not to be taken too seriously, though the film’s real theme is that a writer’s voice is only authentic when it utilizes the writer’s natural gifts, and that comedy is really just another perspective on tragedy. –Tom Keogh

There is a thinly, thinly, thinly veiled attempt at creating a plot and at acting in this fairly dirty blu movie. Kara (Venesa Talor) is sent to experience bodily pleasure by her alien species, which leads to numerous unconnected, plot-irrelevant encounters with all kinds of buxom babes and buff guys. The pool, the massage parlor, the avant-garde theater–these kooky humans seem to be going at it everywhere! Kara must believe that she’s landed not on Earth, but the planet Silicone, but she never seems to kvetch about it. On the plus side the actors are attractive and keep their wooden deliveries at a minimum to allow full enjoyment of the wretched porno-quality soundtrack. Surprisingly, no mention of thanks to Lee Strasberg in the final credits. Plenty o’ skin. –Keith Simanton
